If your mail runs on Stalwart (version 0.16), Imbox can manage the server for you: domains, mailboxes and passwords, all from Settings → Domains. Every mailbox you create is connected for mail automatically. Nothing needs to be installed on the server. Imbox uses Stalwart's management API.
Connect a server
- In Stalwart's admin, create an API key with the Admin role. Copy it. It is shown once.
- In Imbox, go to Settings → Domains → Connect server. Enter the server's address (for example
https://mail.example.com) and the key. Imbox checks the key before saving it, and stores it encrypted. - To change the key later, use Replace key. To disconnect, remove the server. Its mailboxes stay as ordinary IMAP mailboxes.
An API key can only manage the server. It cannot read mail, so each mailbox is connected with its own password.
Domains
Add domain creates the domain on the server and shows the DNS records to copy: MX, SPF, DKIM, DMARC and the rest. You can turn a domain off or remove it. Publishing the records is up to you, wherever your DNS lives.
Mailboxes
- New mailbox. Choose the domain and the part before the
@. The password is generated, or you choose one of at least 10 characters. It is shown once, with a copy button. - Connect an existing mailbox. This resets its password, because Imbox needs to know it. Anything else using the old password, such as a phone, needs the new one. You can import the latest 25, 50, 100 or 200 messages instead of starting empty.
- Reset password and Delete are on each mailbox. Deleting asks you to type the address, and removes the mailbox on the server too.
- Re-sync checks a mailbox against the server and imports what is missing, without deleting anything. There is also Re-sync all. See Mailboxes, import older mail.
- The list is grouped by domain and searchable.
- The admin account is marked, and cannot be connected or deleted from here.
- A mailbox deleted on the server shows as disconnected within about ten minutes. A mailbox added on the server by hand is picked up the next time the list loads.
Mailboxes for AI agents
Switch on This mailbox is for an AI agent when you create a mailbox, or use the robot icon on an existing one. It gets its own API keys and webhooks, and stays out of your own Imbox. See Agent mail.
Calendars
If the server has CalDAV (Stalwart does), each mailbox's calendar stays in step with the server. See Calendar.
Good to know
- Imbox sends through the server's own mail ports, with the mailbox's login. SPF, DKIM and reverse DNS are the server's. A new server with no sending history lands in spam until those, and a PTR record, are set up.
- Imbox does not use outbound port 25. It sends through the submission port, 465 or 587.
